Justine Sloane-Lees

Justine is a director and producer of audio features, fictions and books.

Since its inception seven years ago she has been working at SquareSound in Melbourne creating quality audiobook content for clients including Hachette Australia, Wavesound, Penguin Random House Australia, Podium Audio, Deyan Audio, Audible US and Audible Australia. She has also recently completed commissioned work for the ABC, as well as recording location sound effects for BBC Radio Drama.

In 2015, Justine left the Australian Broadcasting Corporation after twenty-five years, mostly spent working in Radio National's Drama and Features departments. She produced plays, dramatizations, features, comedy and audiobooks; and was Series Producer of First Person, readings of memoir and stories of personal experience.

For First Person she recorded people as diverse as Lonely Planet founder Tony Wheeler, Australian human rights lawyer Geoffrey Robertson QC, actors Kate Fitzpatrick and William McInnes, musicians Anna Goldsworthy, Mark Seymour and Don Walker, social commentators Anne Manne and Kate Jennings, artist Mirka Mora and a plethora of writers including Helen Garner, Don Watson, Cate Kennedy, Alice Pung, and Gerald Murnane. She was also responsible for commissioning readings from people including Alain de Botton, Michael Pollan, Nobel Laureate JM Coetzee, Robyn Davidson, Geraldine Brooks, Tim Flannery, Graeme Blundell and Susan Maushart.

The list of actors she has worked with is a showcase of the best of Australian acting talent, featuring names like Helen Morse, Wendy Hughes, Tracy Mann, Robert Menzies, William McInnes, Colin Friels, William Zappa, Catherine McClements, Belinda McClory, Philip Quast, Alison Whyte, Rhys Muldoon, Zahra Newman and Monica Maughan. She also helps foster the next generation of acting talent through her long-standing association with the Victorian College of the Arts School of Drama, where she teaches third-year acting students.

Playwrights whose work Justine has realised for the ear include Jane Bodie, Vanessa Bates, Ross Mueller, Sofia Laguna and Andrew Bovell. She has collaborated with performance-makers such as Margaret Cameron, Maude Davey and Anna Liebzeit.

Between 2012 and 2015 Justine concentrated on poetry and spoken-work performance for ‘Poetica'.
